Spybot

Spybot is another spy-ware removal tool, but also includes another feature which blocks harmful programs from being loaded while you surf the internet, download programs or read email.

Download Spybot

1. Launch the Internet

2. Go to www.tucows.com

3. Click OPEN

* Place a check mark beside ‘Close this dialog box when

download completes’.

4. After downloading is complete, installation will begin

automatically (see next page).

Install Spybot

1. Click OK

2. Click NEXT

*This is the ‘Welcome’ screen

3. Click to select ‘I accept the

agreement’

4. Click NEXT

5. Click NEXT

*Accept the default

6. Click NEXT

*Keep the default components

7. Click NEXT

when running for the first time

The following 8 steps will only have to be performed the first time you run Spybot after installation.

1. Click the CREATE REGISTRY

BACKUP button

2. Click NEXT

3. Click SEARCH FOR UPDATES

*An internet connection to the

Spybot site will be made and

updates will be searched for

4. Click DOWNLOAD ALL

AVAILABLE UPDATES

5. Click NEXT

6. Click IMMUNIZE THIS SYSTEM

*Spybot will report the number

of ‘bad items’ that are now

blocked

7. Click NEXT

8. Click START USING THE PROGRAM

Running Spybot

Depending on your amount of computer usage, especially Internet usage, it is recommended that you run Spybot at least once per month. You can easily make it a part of your preventive maintenance plan.

Launch the program by DOUBLE CLICKING program icon

Check for Updates

Keeping Spybot updated, will protect your computer from the latest forms of spy-ware and threats.

1. Click UPDATE

2. Click SEARCH FOR UPDATES

*An internet connection will be

made and updates found

3. Click DOWNLOAD UPDATES

Immunize

Immunization protects your computer by asking the user if they want to block the downloading of a known bad threat, while the user surfs the Internet or is downloading information or programs from the Internet. Like ‘Updating’, you need to Immunize every time, since new threats may be added to the list that Spybot will block.

1. Click IMMUNIZE

Search and Destroy

This component searches all your files for spy-ware and then allows you to remove it from your computer.

1. Click SEARCH & DESTROY

2. Click CHECK FOR PROBLEMS

*The green progress bar along

the very bottom will show you

the progress of searching for problems; this may take a few minutes.

‘Problems’ will be displayed

3. If not already checked,

place a CHECK MARK

beside each problem you

want to remove. (You can

expand each problem to

see more details.)

4. Click FIX SELECTED PROBLEMS

5. Depending on settings, Spybot may create a ‘System Restore

Point’ that your computer can be set back to if you remove

an item by mistake that you want to run on your computer.

6. Click YES to remove the ‘problems’

7. If you have a problem that could not be fixed you will be asked

if you want to run Spybot after your next reboot.

Answer YES or NO depending on your preference.

8. Click OK to
